Welcoming a new baby into the world fills your heart to the brim, but with this tiny bundle of joy requires a truckload of gear and gadgets. Before you empty your bank account, check out this helpful list of baby essentials:
Crib or bassinet: Your baby needs a safe place to sleep. Whether you choose a crib or a bassinet, make sure it meets current safety standards.
Car seat: A rear-facing car seat is a must-have for transporting your baby safely. Make sure to choose a car seat that is appropriate for your baby's age, weight and size, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation and use.
Diapers and wipes: Newborns typically go through eight to 12 diapers a day, so having plenty of diapers (cloth or disposable) and wipes is essential.
Clothing: Babies grow quickly, so while you’ll want to have a selection of onesies, sleepers, hats, and socks, don’t overdo it. Be sure to have a few things in the next size up because they will seemingly outgrow their wardrobe overnight!
Feeding supplies: Whether you plan to breastfeed or formula feed, you'll need some feeding essentials such as bottles, breast pumps (if breastfeeding), formula (if formula feeding), nursing bras and breast pads.
Bathtub: A small, portable bathtub or bath seat makes bathing your baby easier and safer. Look for a bathtub with a non-slip surface and support for your baby's head and neck.
Swaddle blankets: Swaddling can help soothe and comfort newborns, so having a few swaddle blankets on hand can be helpful. Look for blankets made of soft, breathable fabric that allows for easy swaddling.
Diaper bag: A diaper bag is essential for carrying diapers, wipes, bottles, clothing and other baby essentials when you're out and about. Look for a diaper bag with multiple compartments and features, such as insulated bottle pockets and a changing pad.
Baby Monitor: A baby monitor allows you to keep an eye (and ear) on your baby while they sleep or play in another room. Choose a monitor with features that meet your needs, such as video monitoring, temperature sensors and two-way audio.
Health and safety supplies: Stock up on essential health and safety supplies such as baby thermometers, infant nail clippers, baby-safe unscented laundry detergent, baby-safe cleaning products and a first aid kit.
Baby gear: Depending on your lifestyle and preferences, you may also want to consider purchasing a stroller, baby carrier or sling, infant swing, bouncer or rocker, play mat and high chair.
