On Monday, June 2, University of Toronto’s Varsity Stadium was filled with students, this time of the much younger variety. About 250 kids in grades four to six gathered for our Healthy Me Week launch event, to learn how to Get Up, Fuel Up and Own Up.

TV personalities from YTV (Carlos) and Teletoon (Andrea) emceed the opening ceremonies, with Raptor, the crazy mascot upstaging the proceedings every chance he got.

The Dean of Kinesiology Ira Jacobs welcomed the students and opened the event. MP Dr. Kellie Leitch also led the students through some stretches and two-time Olympic canoeist and bronze medallist Mark Oldershaw told the kids what it meant to him to Get Up, Fuel Up and Own Up.

Then it was time to get busy. Students were put through two Get Up stations led by NBA Fit and dancers from Family Channel’s Next Step. ParentsCanada was proud to co-host the Fuel Up station with Kids’ CBC for the second year in a row, this year joined by Vervegirl Canada magazine and Freggie, the fruit and veggie mascot from  Canadian Produce Marketing Association. We organized a grocery store challenge relay race that got the kids moving and thinking about their food at the same time. At the Own Up station, Carlos and Andrea got the kids thinking about what they would do to be healthier and kids lined a wall with their photos and pledges.

ParentsCanada thanks Companies Committed to Kids (CCK) for their leadership in getting this event off the ground!
